Tory's Tea-Time Tidbits
It’s like the Beyoncé of oolongs. Seriously.
Tieguanyin, Ti Kuan Yin, and Ti Kwan Yin all refer to the same famous oolong tea, but they're just different ways of transliterating (or, let's say, translating the sounds of) the original Chinese name into English. It's a bit like how "Sophie" might become "Sofie" in another language – same essence, just a little name makeover.
So, legend has it, in China, there was this super kind-hearted farmer who would pass by a dilapidated temple with a rusted iron statue of the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin. The poor temple was like that one room we all have – you know, the one we avoid because, clutter. One day, our farmer friend thought, ‘Enough is enough!’ and started cleaning the place up. No magic cleaning supplies, just pure intentions.
Fast-forward a bit, and this farmer has a dream. The Goddess of Mercy appears, revealing a hidden treasure in a cave behind the temple. And voila! It wasn’t gold or vintage designer shoes but something even better—a tea shoot. He grew this into a tea bush, and the tea it produced was so exceptional, so utterly divine, he named it Ti Kuan Yin, which translates to "Iron Goddess of Mercy" in honour of the goddess.
Now, if you're flexing those tea muscles, you might've also heard or seen it called Iron Buddha, Iron Goddess Tea, or just Goddess of Mercy tea.
No matter how you slice (or steep) it, they all point to the same delightful tea known for its floral notes, rich history, and the lovely legend of the Goddess of Mercy. So, the next time you're sipping this tea, you can revel in the fact that you're enjoying a brew with a name as multifaceted as its flavour profile!
